After the Armistice of 1918, he crossed Germany and joined the contingent of 400 French advisers fighting alongside the Poles against the Russian revolutionaries. He had the opportunity to demonstrate his authority and daring. It was during this period that he came to know personally the future General de Gaulle. Among his mementoes, he kept this last photograph of Tsar Nicholas II.
